Interview with Mount Salem

MOUNT SALEM are a Psychedelic Doom Metal/Rock four-piece outfit out of Chicago, Illinois. The band boasts Emily Kopplin on lead vocals (plus keys), with Kyle Morrison on lead guitars, Cody Davidson on drums and Mark Hewett on bass.

Songs like ‘Lucid’ have an earth-shattering lowness to them … with cave-fulls of doom-filled bruising chords …. but it’s when Emily’s dragon-fire vocals flare in that you really get a sense of why this band is so gloriously different … they impact on your senses with full climactic, cinematic effect. Their music is dramatic and mournful beyond compare. Yet the sounds contain an unparalleled majesty that lifts them way above your expectations.

The Grand Inquisitor at METAL AS RELIGION had the chance to speak to Cody from Mount Salem about ‘Endless’ and the possibility of a European tour. In the near future:

SO, WHAT IS THE DOOM/SLUDGE MOVEMENT LIKE IN CHICAGO?

Chicago is a great place for music in general. As far as doom bands go, there are always good local bands to play with and you can get people to come out to shows during the week instead of just on weekends, which is nice. Plenty of good venues as well. Chicago just has a good all around night life.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR MOST PASSIONATE FANS?

I can’t think of a specific place … but it’s really nice to see people come out to see us all over the country while on tour. We just want to keep touring so we can continue to meet new people.

TELL US THE STORY BEHIND “ENDLESS” – THE EP

“Endless” was the first group of songs we wrote together. We started the band and just started writing for an entire summer and “Endless” is what we came up with. The EP was actually recorded before we played our first show. We are happy with the way it came out but the addition of the two new songs on the Metal Blade release really made the album feel complete for us.

TELL US ABOUT BEING FEATURED AT THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON MUSEUM

We played an after party for our friend Josh Kurpius’s photo exhibit opening. He is a good friend of ours and a great photographer and he actually comes on tour with us and takes most of our photos. When he asked us to play, we knew it would be a fun night so we did it and ended up playing to a sold out crowd. The evening as a whole was a really good time and Josh’s exhibit was amazing to see in person.

YOU OFTEN GET LIKENED TO WITCH MOUNTAIN – ARE THE COMPARISONS FAIR?

I think we often get compared to bands with female singers in general. Sometimes I agree with the comparisons and sometimes I think we just get categorized with other female fronted bands. We really have never thought to write something a certain way we because we do have Emily as our singer, we just write together as a whole and this is what we come up with.

WHICH BLACK SABBATH TRACKS / SONGS HAVE MOST INFLUENCED YOUR SOUNDS?

We don’t ever think of specific tracks or anything we are just very influenced by them. I really like the early albums – “Master of Reality” is probably my favourite. Emily our singer really loves Ozzy. She always compares outfits and stuff to him. Ozzy rules.

HAVE YOU BEEN OUT TO SCANDINAVIA / EUROPE YET? ANY PLANS?

We have yet to be out of the country but have plans for that this year. We have been talking to some people in Europe so stay tuned!

WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS FOR MOUNT SALEM IN 2014?

We are currently in the process of booking a small Spring tour here in the US. Also looking into a European tour in the Fall so we shall see what happens. Between those we are just going to keep writing more songs and spend some time in the warm weather. We have had a long cold winter here so we can’t wait for the changing of seasons.

Thank you MOUNT SALEM
