Interview with Jill Janus of Huntress

Huntress Quote
Californian metal workers “Huntress” released their début album titled ‘Spell Eater’ in April 2012. The album was recorded earlier in the year in Los Angeles – and was produced by Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Children of Bodom and Skeletonwitch.)

The band is justly famous for their melodic heavy metal compositions that always seem to have a sprinkling of thrash in them … plus more than just a hint of death and black metal. The band’s thundering drums, heavy riffs, catchy choruses and spectral solos – from the four-octave lead singer Jill Janus – are derived from musical concoctions that combine esoteric sciences with all-night-long bong rips.

Huntress Spell EaterThe Metal As Religion Grand Inquisitor recently chatted to Jill Janus about the band’s upcoming tour with LAMB OF GOD and about working on the third HUNTRESS album:

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO TOURING WITH LAMB OF GOD & DECAPITATED IN JANUARY?

Huntress toured North America in the fall of 2013 with Lamb of God, so we know to expect… a professional, fast paced production. It was incredible the first time, so we’re really pumped to take the show overseas with LOG and Decapitated.

WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY FIND YOUR MOST OUTRAGEOUS FANS?

Canadian fans are probably the most outrageous and also spend the most money on our merchandise. They are so stoked on heavy metal. Huntress always kills it in Canada.

WE LOVED THE ‘ZENITH’ VIDEO … IT’S INSANELY GOOD! DO YOU THINK THAT METAL TAKES US BEYOND THE CELESTIAL SPHERE ?

Thanks, “Zenith” is part of our legacy. Metal is limitless.

SOME HAVE COMMENTED THAT THIS SONG IS ACTUALLY ABOUT SMOKING WEED?

I wrote the lyrics to reflect that, yes. Part of “Zenith” is about getting as high as you possibly can, and that would be with aliens in outer space.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH DIRECTOR PHIL MUCCI?

Phil Mucci took our vision and made it his bitch. He’s a visionary and one of the most talented human beings I’ve ever encountered. A true artistic genius.

Huntress Starbound Beast

WE KNOW THAT YOU’VE BEEN TOURING ‘STARBOUND BEAST’ ALMOST NON-STOP? HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP UP ALL THAT HARD WORK?

My insanity, unrelenting determination and commitment to our band. Plus having a solid team that believes in you, backing you up. My band mates and I agreed to share one vision for Huntress and abolish all other ambitions. That drive and focus can fuel anyone if harnessed properly. We love heavy metal. There is no other life for us.

HOW IS WORK ON YOUR THIRD ALBUM GOING?

Faster than anticipated! Blake Meahl and I are writing nightly. You can’t stop when you decide to release one album per year and tour nearly non-stop. There’s no free time to fuck off. Nor do I want to do anything else, I’m in deep and I love it.

WE KNOW YOU WORKED WITH OTHER ARTISTS ON ‘STARBOUND BEAST’ ( “I Want to F**k You to Death” was co-written with Lemmy Kilmister) – WILL YOU BE LOOKING TO WORK WITH OTHER ARTISTS – PERHAPS CO-WRITING WITH OTHER ARTISTS – FOR THE NEXT ALBUM?

We didn’t plan to collaborate with Lemmy, it just manifested magically. I’d like to keep it that way and see who the Universe brings me.

WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM THE NEXT ALBUM?

A modern, crushing, melodic heavy metal album in the Crone phase.

LOOKING BACK OVER AN INCREDIBLY BUSY YEAR – WHAT HAVE BEEN THE  HIGH-POINTS OF 2013 FOR HUNTRESS?

Touring with some of our idols. Especially Danzig, and singing “Skulls” on stage with him and Doyle during the 25th Anniversary tour. That was a teenage dream come true.

IS THE BEST YET TO COME?

The best is always yet to come.

THANK YOU, HUNTRESS
